BEN REE

WILSONS DOWNFALL / NSW / ROUND 2

Ben Ree is the manager of a Rural merchandise business in Warwick QLD called Pursehouse Rural.

In Ben’s spare time with his wife Jo and 3 kids they run a property “Birraleigh” in the Northern tablelands. Prior to the recent dry spell, Ben ran about 80 Angus x Brangus cows and had big plans to grow that number larger. However, due to the lack of rain and the pressure that a paralysis tick infection had, they lost a lot of calves which would have impacted their future income. Ben has recently trialled trading cattle for cash flow and it has overall been a success.

Ben has set up a program of grain assisting steers and heifers for 100 to 120 days feeding 1% bodyweight of grain in grain feeders. As a result of recent good rain and a boom in the market, he has decided to cash out of the breeding operations and reinvest in trade cattle.

For this challenge, Ben will be examining the weight gain of 70 recently purchased weaner steers. Half treated with Multimin (Odd Tag number)  compared to the other half not treated with Multimin (even tag number). These cattle will be grain assisted and rotationally grazed on natural pastures and crop.
